Department of Botany

The Department of Botany of the Faculty of Natural Sciences H.S.Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University was founded in 1938. Since 1946, the department was headed by botanist, Prof. Z.M. Eidelman. In 1956, due to the reorganization of the University, the department was abolished. After its restoration in 1964, the department was headed by Prof. M.M. Ovchinnikov, known physiologist of plants.

From 1983 to 1985 Dr. V.I. Kuznetsova, expert in the field of pedagogy, was the head of the Department. In 1985–2000, the department was headed by Dr. O.G. Vovk. In 2000–2016, the head of the department was headed by agrochemist, Academician of the International Academy of Sciences of Ecology and Life Safety, Prof. T.O. Hrynchenko.

Since 2016, the department is headed by mycologist Prof. D.V. Leontyev.

Today the department provides educational and reserch work in the field of botany, mycology, protistology, genetics and molecular biology of plants and fungi. The working results of the department staff includes textbooks for school and university, articles in international scientific journals, participation in world congresses and numerous expeditions, the creation of a scientific herbarium and botanical museum.
