Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology is a structural unit of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The aim of the Department of Zoology is to ensure effective training of highly qualified specialists for teaching biology and integrated science in educational institutions.

 Objective: Basic and advanced training of biological specialists specializing in zoological, ecological and environmental disciplines who have knowledge of the functioning of living systems, are able to use modern instrumental and information technologies to carry out independent scientific research and solve practical problems in the field of their professional activity.

The educational process and research work at the Department are provided by 3 doctors of biological sciences, professors and 4 candidates of sciences (PhD), associate professors, 3 cooperatives (2 doctors of sciences, professors, 1 candidate of sciences (PhD), associate professors).

 Strategic directions of the Department:

The research work of the teachers and members of the Department is aimed at studying entomofauna, avifauna and bat fauna in the man-made transformations, including urban systems of the city of Kharkiv and natural ecosystems; and analysis of the morpho-functional characteristics of the digestive tract of birds of different trophic specializations, and the study of mechanisms for the maintenance of homeostasis and the development of technologies for the breeding of artificial insect populations.

The scientific research on the Department of Zoology is conducted on the following topics:

• «Study of mechanisms for maintaining biodiversity at different levels of organization of biological systems» (0119U 002295, subject approved on 01.2017.; Scientific Advisor: Doctor of Biological, Prof. Kharchenko L.P.)
• «The structural interaction and functional life-hood of animals on technogenetic areas of Kharkiv region» (0121U100718, subject approved on 20.01.2021; Scientific Advisor: Doctor of Biological, Prof. Chaplyhina A.B.).

The Department of Zoology has research laboratories:

• Biotechnologies (Advisor: Doctor of Biological, Prof. T.YU. Markina)
• Environmental Monitoring and Protection (Advisor: PhD of Biological, Assoc. Prof. A.S. Vlashchenko).

Educational process of the Department of Zoology:
The Department of Zoology provides training for the first (bachelor’s) and second (master) levels of higher education in knowledge 01 Education / Pedagogy in specialty 014 Secondary education (biology). 09 Biology.

At the Department of Zoology there is a postgraduate course in the educational-scientific program in the specialty 091 Biology, where 14 postgraduate students (Phd – Philosophy Doctor) are studying and training.

The department is the graduating for higher education students in the specialty 014 Secondary education (Biology), 091 Biology, 014.15 Natural sciences.

Our graduates work in institutions of general secondary education, vocational education and institutions of higher education.

Our graduates include Methodist teachers, GED students, school principals, PhDs and Doctors of sciences.

The Department maintains scientific and creative ties with the Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Evolutionary Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IEE), and the National Scientific Centre The Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine, the Ukrainian Research Institute of Environmental Problems, the Carpathian Ecology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Olesya Gonchar Dnieper National University, Sumy State Pedagogical University named after A.S. Makarenko, National Natural Park «Gomolshansk forests», and other scientific institutions and higher educational institutions. Kharkov, Ukraine, Poland, schools of Kharkov and other Ukrainian cities.
